Fractals

“When each piece of a shape is geometrically similar to the whole, both the shape and the cascade that generate it are called self-similar. … Fractals are complex regular or irregular geometrical shapes that are characterized by a ‘broken’ dimension, i.e. they are not one, two or three dimensional but something in between.” – Benoit Mandelbrot

Fractals replicate mathematical forms or shapes from the infinitesimally minuscule to the grand scale of the cosmos. It is just as infinite as meter, time, and space. Like the hum of the planets keeping time with their own song. A replication that enfolds within it all known existence. Lightning, veins, mold, roots, neurons, and rivers. All patterns repeat. Why is it then that we don’t treat a polluted river or our inflamed veins with similar care? Do they not share the same root cause? Is not the care of both a holy act? Our fractals, our design is but a mirrored image of the world we live in. We are sick because our world is sick. What other fractals can we find? The cracks in dry creek bed, ice crystals on the window pane, jazz, geometry, symbiosis within symbiosis, a cell forming from lipids on a primordial sea and the atmosphere that shields our world.
